Miles was ready to start a war.

Flying down the coast, he maxed out the speedometer in his car. All the while Regina gripped the seat beneath her. The red-head had revealed her name and her mission. Her Alpha, Caz, told her to seduce Miles and push Lia away from him. While she’d tried to do as he asked, she also wanted to keep Lia’s skin out of his hands.

“Not because I want Caz for myself or anything. It would take a miracle of a woman to bring his head back down to earth. All I want is to make sure things stay the way they are. None of the packs in the area need any more power than they already have.”

“Then what would you have me do? It’s not like we can keep Lia away from them forever. Do not suggest she return to the ocean.” The last of his words came out as a menacing growl.

Regina threw a sidelong glance at him, still clutching the seat for dear life. “You’re a damned fool if you haven’t figured it out already.”

The car stuttered as his foot let off the gas. “What do you mean?”

Regina shook her head. “Never mind. Let’s just go get your girl.”

They were on their way to Santa Cruz, a city north of Monterey. Already, Lia had been in Oscar Torres’ hands for too long. Each second Oscar held her, Miles’ mind raced. He tried not to imagine what the northern Alpha was doing to his mate. His bear roared with each imagined scenario. The steering wheel groaned beneath his hands.

He forced himself to let up as he passed a hidden police car. The cruiser didn’t pull out from it’s hiding spot, and Miles let out a breath of relief. It was taking too long to get there. Logically, he knew they’d left only moments after Oscar and his pack. Miles should only be minutes behind them, but his bear didn’t care for logic. It roared and raged against everything that’d happened.

“Turn there,” Regina said as she pointed at a nearby road.

The car’s tires squealed on the pavement. In the distance, he could see the rising Ferris wheel of the pier. He wished there were different circumstances. He would have taken Lia atop the spinning wheel so that they could both peer at the stretching ocean. Instead, he was staging a small rescue mission because a bunch of grown men were being assholes.

“You passed it!” Regina screamed.

Miles slammed on the brakes, popping the emergency brake so that the car spun around. He slipped it back into drive and followed Regina’s outstretched finger. When he pulled into the driveway, his car bumped another, but he ignored the impact. Instead, he flew out of his car and toward the house.

The sound of breaking glass made him pause. His heart lodged itself into his throat and he surged forward. People behind him shouted for him to stop. He threw open the door and slid to a halt in the living room.
